In 2018, we launched a packaging bring-back scheme in Hong Kong SAR, China inviting customers to return their emptied plastic and glass cosmetic packaging to Aesop signature stores and counters across the city.
Given that recycling rates in Hong Kong SAR, China is comparatively low, this presented the opportunity to establish an in-store customer initiative that contributes to improved recycling awareness and rates.
By offering customers a convenient solution to return used glass and plastic packaging for recycling, we aim to reduce used packaging from Aesop, and from other cosmetic and personal care companies, going to Hong Kong SAR, China landfill.
In 2020 we also expanded the Rinse and Return programme to Taiwan, China, cumulatively for 2020 both programmes diverted over 4.5 tonnes of packaging material from landfill. In mid- 2021 we expanded the Rinse and Return programme to Singapore. In 2024, we expanded this trial to a variety of stores across Asia, Europe, The United States and Australia. We will continue to evaluate appropriate packaging recycling programmes in additional markets, with a view to expand this program over time.
